Driving Sustainability Forward, Empowering a Cleaner Automotive Future

The International Automotive Oversight Bureau – Carbon Division (IAOB‑C) is committed to advancing the sustainability and carbon performance of the global automotive supply chain through the oversight, development, and application of automotive sustainability standards.

We collaborate with automotive manufacturers, certification bodies, and stakeholders worldwide to ensure integrity, transparency, and continuous improvement in sustainability management systems—driving measurable decarbonization and environmental stewardship across the automotive industry. Guided by a deep passion for accelerating a cleaner, more responsible future for mobility, IAOB‑C empowers organizations to lead with purpose, reduce their environmental impact, and build a more sustainable automotive ecosystem for generations to come.

Our Purpose: Accelerating Sustainability Across the Global Automotive Industry
01
Scheme Oversight

We lead the oversight and continual improvement of the AutoCarbon certification scheme—ensuring every certification reflects the highest levels of credibility, integrity, and environmental impact.

02
Global Coordination

We unify the AutoCarbon certification experience worldwide, working across regions, industries, and cultures to deliver a consistent, trusted, and globally aligned sustainability standard.

03
Harmonization Support

We partner with automotive manufacturers, suppliers, and global stakeholders to champion harmonized carbon management system requirements, accelerating the industry’s transition toward low‑carbon operations.

04
Data Management

We maintain a centralized, strategic data foundation that empowers smarter decision‑making, enhances transparency, and strengthens the performance and governance of the entire AutoCarbon certification ecosystem.

What is AutoCarbon®?
AutoCarbon is:
A management system certification scheme for automotive built upon ISO 14001.
A certification focused on the organization, ensuring carbon-related processes are well-managed.
A process-based framework that ensures Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) calculations are controlled, traceable, auditable, and credible.
A system verifying that organizations follow appropriate Product Category Rules (PCRs), recognized carbon accounting standards (e.g., Catena-X Rulebook, GHG Protocol, etc.), as required by the automotive customer.
A governance structure for reliable carbon data, aligned with Monitoring, Reporting & Verification (MRV) principles.
AutoCarbon is not:
A carbon calculator – it does not compute or generate PCF results.
A Product Category Rule (PCR) – it does not create new Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) calculation rules.
An LCA tool or database – it does not mandate a specific platform (e.g., Catena-X data exchange, IMDS database, etc.)
A product certification or label – certification applies to the management system.
A standard that sets carbon thresholds – it requires performance management and improvement, not predefined CO2 limits.
Limited to product-level carbon data – it covers organizational processes, supplier management, internal audits, and continual improvement.

AutoCarbon® Certification Coming soon in 2027

The AutoCarbon Standard establishes the first dedicated, sector-specific automotive carbon management system designed to help organizations systematically manage, measure, and continually reduce greenhouse gas emissions across the global automotive value chain. Aligned with ISO 14001 requirements, the standard extends traditional environmental management principles to address the rapidly increasing regulatory, customer, and market expectations for transparent and credible carbon performance.

The standard is not a standalone replacement for ISO 14001—it supplements it with automotive‑specific carbon requirements and embeds carbon management into every stage of design, sourcing, manufacturing, logistics, product use, and end‑of‑life treatment.

AutoCarbon Certification will be conducted according the AutoCarbon Rules for Certification and Accreditation, governed by the IAOB-C.

AutoCarbon certification is currently in the pilot phase with final publication and certification activities expected in 2027.

Our Commitment Through Industry Partnership

We’re proud to be a member of Suppliers Partnership for the Environment (SP), a collaborative forum that brings together vehicle manufacturers and suppliers working toward a more sustainable automotive industry.

Through this partnership, we have the opportunity to learn from and contribute to shared efforts focused on improving environmental performance across the supply chain. SP’s work to advance environmental sustainability across the automotive sector aligns closely with our own commitment to responsible practices, and we value being part of a community working toward a more positive environmental impact.
